Marseille's Golden Guardian

The Story

Standing on Montée Emile Maslin in Marseille, I was struck by the sheer verticality of Notre-Dame de la Garde. The sun caught the gilded statue at the very top, making it blaze against the brilliant winter sky. I tilted my Nikon Z 7 II upwards, framing the tower's distinctive striped pattern and the warm, pale stone of the main building.

The clear blue was a perfect contrast to the golden figure and the earthy tones of the basilica. It felt like a moment of profound peace, looking up at this revered landmark. You can see a few other visitors on the lower wall, looking out, a subtle reminder of the human scale against the monumental architecture.

It was a crisp December afternoon, the kind of bright, clear winter day that makes the colours pop. I wanted to capture not just the structure, but the feeling of looking up into something ancient and sacred, bathed in the beautiful light of the French Riviera.
