Why I photograph

I'm Elijah, and Meridian is a studio of one. I don't come home from a place the same person who left for it, and somewhere along the way, chasing that feeling became the whole point. Every trip is a search for the thing that made me fall in love with travel in the first place, and a reason to go looking for more of it.

For a long time travel was something I simply experienced: a horizon I stood in front of and then walked away from. The problem with a feeling that big is that it lives and dies in the space of one afternoon. You can describe it to someone later, but the describing never quite lands.

Photography is how I finally kept it. Learning to make an image gave my travelling a second life: now a place isn't only mine to feel, it's mine to hand to someone else. I get to take the light I stood in and set it down somewhere it can be seen again.

The point of it

Bringing the place
home to you.

That's the part I didn't expect to love the most. A photograph lets me bring a place back for people who haven't been there, who maybe never will, and let them stand in it for a second. If someone looks at a frame and feels a corner of the world they'd never have reached otherwise, then the trip did something beyond me.

And there's a real joy in the making of it. Every piece is the world run through my own eye: where I chose to stand, what I waited for, the moment I decided was the one. Getting to be that creative, and to share the result, is honestly the best part of the whole thing.

What I shoot on

A Nikon Z7 II,
and a raw file.

I shoot a Nikon Z7 II. Forty-five megapixels of full frame, which reads like a spec sheet right up until you are standing somewhere cold at altitude, in failing light, with one chance at it. It is not a precious camera. It has been rained on, sanded, and carried up more stairs than either of us wanted. What it gives me is room: enough resolution that a canvas can hold the detail I actually saw, and enough latitude that a hard sky and a dark foreground can survive in the same frame.

Everything comes home as raw. Never a JPEG, never a decision made on my behalf, in the half-second after the shutter, by a processor guessing at what I meant. A raw file is deliberately unfinished. It is the whole latent image: shadows still holding their information, highlights still recoverable, colour still an open question. It is the negative, and the negative was only ever half the work.

The rest happens at the desk in San Francisco, and that is where the photograph becomes the thing I remember rather than the thing the sensor recorded. I am not inventing a place that wasn't there. I am pulling back toward the truth of having stood in it: warming the light to the temperature it actually felt like, lifting a shadow until the detail my eye had already adjusted to comes back, letting a sky stay as heavy as it really was. The camera records, the raw file remembers, and what you hang on your wall is the version I stood in.
