Hāwea's Windswept Sentinel
Standing guard over the vibrant turquoise waters of Lake Hāwea, this ancient eucalyptus tree has weathered countless seasons. It’s a powerful reminder of the raw, untamed beauty that defines the Otago region of New Zealand.
The Story
I remember this spot on Lake Hāwea vividly. The wind was really picking up, whipping through the branches of this incredible eucalyptus tree. Its bark was peeling away in strips, revealing these amazing colours – warm reds, oranges, and yellows. It felt like the tree was alive, really embracing the wildness of the place.
The contrast between the rugged tree and the impossibly blue water was breathtaking. The lake itself was a kaleidoscope of turquoise and deep blue, reflecting the dramatic, fast-moving clouds. Even though it was a bright day, the clouds added a sense of drama and depth to the scene, making the whole landscape feel incredibly dynamic.
It was one of those moments where you just feel so small against the vastness of nature. Standing there, with the wind in my face and this ancient sentinel before me, I felt a profound connection to the powerful landscape of New Zealand. It's a feeling I tried to capture in this shot.
