Pyramid of the Bay

The Story

Standing on Telegraph Hill, I was struck by the sheer density of San Francisco's skyline. The Transamerica Pyramid, of course, is the undeniable star, its unique silhouette cutting a sharp figure against the hazy sky. I wanted to capture the relationship between this icon and its urban neighbors, showcasing the incredible variety of architectural styles that make up this dynamic city.

The soft, diffused light of the overcast day was perfect for this shot. It flattened the contrast just enough to reveal the intricate details on the surrounding buildings, from the grid-like patterns of the glass facades to the more traditional brickwork in the foreground. It’s a perspective that really highlights the verticality and texture of the city.

There's a certain timelessness to black and white photography when it comes to cityscapes. It strips away the distractions of color and allows the viewer to focus on the form, the structure, and the sheer scale of human endeavor.
